Combivir an NRTI, is used to fight the human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV) that causes AIDS. It is a
combination product containing the two AIDS drugs, lamivudine
(Epivir) and zidovudine (Retrovir)
and is intended for use with additional AIDS drugs. HIV does its
damage by slowly destroying the
immune system, eventually leaving the body defenseless against
infections. The drugs in Combivir
interfere with the virus's ability to reproduce, thus staving
off the decline of the immune system
and preserving better health. Combivir is not a cure for HIV
infection or AIDS. It does not completely
eliminate HIV from the body or totally restore the immune system.
There is still a danger of serious
infections, so you should be sure to see your doctor regularly for
monitoring and tests. |
| Crixivan
(Generic) |
Indinavir Sulfate - Cipla - 400mg capsules |
SS |
HIV thrives by taking over the immune system's vital CD4 cells
(white blood cells) and using their
inner workings to make additional copies of itself. Crixivan
belongs to a class of HIV drugs called
protease inhibitors, (PI's) which work by interfering with an
important step in the virus's reproductive
cycle. although Crixivan cannot eliminate HIV already present in the
body, it can reduce the amount of
virus available to infect other cells. Crixivan can be taken alone
or in with other HIV drugs such as
Retrovir. Because Crixivan and Retrovir attack the virus in
different ways, the combination is likely
to be more effective than either drug alone. |

Cipla manufactures Duovir (Combivir, Lamivudine/Zidovudine). Duovir
can be used alone or with other
medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in
patients with or without acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It will slow the spread of HIV
infection in the body.
Zidovudine/Lamivudine is not a cure and may not decrease the
number of HIV-related illnesses. |
| Duovir-N |
Lamiv. + Zidov. + Nevirapine - Cipla - 150/300/200mg |
SS |
Duovir-N is a combination of 3 drugs commonly used in the management
of Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV) infection. Each tablet of Duovir-N contains half of the
commonly prescribed daily doses of
zidovudine, lamivudine and nevirapine. All three drugs are to be
administered twice daily irrespective
of meals, permitting a fixed-dose combination to be formulated. With
the availability of this
combination formulation, patients may be better able to adhere to
triple drug regimens, thereby
enhancing compliance. Duovir-N is indicated for the treatment of HIV
infection, once patients have
been stabilized on the maintenance regimen of nevirapine 200 mg bd,
and have demonstrated
adequate tolerability to nevirapine. |

Like other drugs for HIV, Epivir (an NRTI ) interferes with the
virus's ability to reproduce.
This staves off the collapse of the immune system. The
Epivir/Retrovir combination does not
completely eliminate HIV or totally restore the immune system. There
is still a danger of serious
infections, so you should be sure to see your doctor regularly for
monitoring and tests.
It's important to keep adequate levels of Epivir in your bloodstream
at all times, so you need to keep
taking this medication regularly, just as prescribed, even when
you're feeling better.
Epivir may be taken with or without food. |

Retrovir slows down the progress of HIV. Combining Retrovir with
other drugs such as Epivir and
Crixivan can help slow the progression. Retrovir is also prescribed
for HIV-infected children over
3 months of age who have symptoms of HIV or who have no
symptoms but, through testing, have
shown evidence of impaired immunity. Retrovir taken during pregnancy
often prevents transmission
of HIV from mother to child. Because Retrovir is not a cure for HIV
infections or AIDS, those who are
infected may continue to develop complications, including
opportunistic infections (exotic infections
that develop when the immune system falters). Therefore, frequent
blood counts by your doctor are
strongly advised. Notify your doctor immediately of any changes in
your general health. |
| Stavir |
Stavudine, Zerit, d4T - Cipla - 30mg or 40mg capsules |

Stavir (Stavudine) is indicated for the treatment of adults with advanced HIV
infection who are
intolerant of
approved therapies with proven clinical benefit or who have
experienced significant
clinical or
immunologic deterioration while receiving these therapies or for
whom such therapies are
contraindicated. Stavir is contraindicated in patients with
clinically significant hypersensitivity to
stavudine or to any of the components contained in the formulation.
It should not be used in
combination with zidovudine. |

Sustiva is one of the growing number of drugs used to fight HIV
infection, it is an NNRTI class hiv drug.
Like other drugs for HIV, Sustiva works by impairing the virus's
ability to multiply. However, when
taken alone it may prompt the virus to become resistant. Sustiva is
therefore always taken with at
least one other HIV medication, such as Retrovir or Crixivan. Even
when used properly, it may remain
effective for only a limited time. Though Sustiva can slow the
progress of HIV, it is not a cure.
HIV-related infections remain a danger, so frequent checkups and
tests are still advisable. |

40 mg/Lamivudine 150 mg/Nevirapine 200 mg |
Triomune is a combination of 3 drugs commonly used in the management
of Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV) infection. Both stavudine and lamivudine belong to the
nucleoside analogue class of
antiretroviral drugs. Both drugs act by terminating the growth of
the DNA chain and inhibiting the
reverse transcriptase of HIV. Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse
transcriptase inhibitor. It acts by
directly inhibiting reverse transcriptase.
Each tablet of Triomune contains half of the commonly prescribed
daily doses of stavudine, lamivudine
and nevirapine. All three drugs are to be administered twice daily,
permitting a fixed-dose combination
to be formulated. With the availability of this combination
formulation, patients may be better able to
adhere to triple drug regimens, thereby enhancing compliance.
Compliance is crucial, because the
virus multiplies at an extremely rapid rate, and missed doses lead
to emergence of resistant virus
and consequently, failure of therapy.
Triomune is not intended for use in patients who are just initiating
therapy with Nevirapine. Triomune
should be administered only to patients who have received
Stavudine + Lamivudine (standard doses)
+ Nevirapine (200mg OD) for 2 weeks and have demonstrated
adequate tolerability to Nevirapine. |

Videx should be used as part of a carefully chosen combination of anti-HIV treatments in order to get the
most benefit. Studies have shown that when taken alone Videx has a strong anti-HIV effect at first, but
the virus can quickly become resistant and the studies conclude that using Videx in combination with at
least two other anti-HIV drugs can prevent the virus from becoming resistant. Drug resistance tests
(genotypic or phenotypic) have been shown to be beneficial in deciding the best anti-HIV treatment
regimen specific to an individual. |

Stavudine (d4T) will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS;
however, it helps to keep HIV from
reproducing and appears to slow down the destruction of the immune
system. This may help delay the
development of problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease.
Stavudine will not keep you from
spreading HIV to other people. People who receive this medicine may
continue to have the problems
usually related to AIDS or HIV disease. Stavudine may cause some
serious side effects.
Check with your doctor if any new health problems or symptoms occur
while you are taking stavudine. |

ABACAVIR (Ziagen®) is an antiviral drug called a nucleoside reverse
transcriptase inhibitor or NRTI.
Abacavir is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
infection. Abacavir may reduce the
amount of HIV in the blood and increase the number of CD4 cells
(T-cells) in the blood. Abacavir is
used in combination with other drugs to treat the HIV virus.
Abacavir will not cure or prevent HIV
infection or AIDS. You may still develop other infections or
conditions associated with HIV.
Generic abacavir tablets are not yet available.
Hypersensitivity reaction (serious allergic reaction): About 4 in
every 100 patients, who are treated
with Ziagen, develop a hypersensitivity reaction to the active
ingredient abacavir. The symptoms of
this reaction include fever; nausea or vomiting or diarrhoea or
abdominal pain; skin rash or skin
redness or itching; severe tiredness or body aches or generally
feeling ill; shortness of breath,
sore throat or cough. If you develop any of these symptoms call your
doctor IMMEDIATELY WHO
WILL ADVISE YOU WHETHER YOU SHOULD STOP TAKING ZIAGEN. Other
symptoms may include
joint or muscle pain, swelling of the neck, headache. Occasionally
inflammation of the eye
(conjunctivitis), ulcers in the mouth or low blood pressure may
occur. The symptoms of this
allergic reaction usually occur in the first six weeks of treatment
with Ziagen, and get worse with
continued treatment. If you have had this serious reaction to
Ziagen, NEVER take Ziagen again as
within hours you may experience a life-threatening lowering of your
blood pressure or death.
If you are hypersensitive to Ziagen you should return all of your
unused Ziagen to your doctor or
pharmacist for proper disposal. |

Zidovudine slows down the progress of HIV. Combining Zidovudine with
other drugs such as Epivir
and Crixivan can help slow the progression. Zidovudine is also
prescribed for HIV-infected children
over 3 months of age who have symptoms of HIV or who have no
symptoms but, through testing,
have shown evidence of impaired immunity. Zidovudine taken during
pregnancy often prevents
transmission of HIV from mother to child.
The long-term effects of treatment with zidovudine are unknown.
However, treatment with this drug
may lead to blood diseases, including granulocytopenia (a severe
blood disorder characterized by
a sharp decrease of certain types of white blood cells called
granulocytes) and severe anemia
requiring blood transfusions. This is especially true in women,
individuals who are overweight, people
who have been using this medication for a long time, people with
more advanced HIV, and those who
start treatment later in the course of their infection.
Frequent blood counts by your doctor are strongly advised. Notify
your doctor immediately of any
changes in your general health. |
